LO1 Investigation of the radio industry

Conglomerate

A conglomerate radio company owns may different radio stations and shows which will cater to a different audience through its many subsidiaries, for example the BBC is a radio conglomerate and owns many different radio stations, which cater to different and more niche audiences i.e. the have BBC Radio 1, which i targeted at young people aged 13-25 and plays popular chart music and is seen to be very mainstream and they also have other radio stations which appeal to different cultures i.e. BBC Asian Network, which plays content and music and targets at the Asian community and will appeal to this more neich audience.

The conglomereates over all target audience will cover a much wider demogrpahpic as they have lots of radio station all of which are suitable for a different person i.e. the BBC coveres a wide demographic as it puts ,lots of varied and different types of radio show i.e. BBC Radio 1 appeals to a younger and mainstream audience where as BBC Radio 4 appeals to an older and more nieche audience.

The BBC dosent rund averts as they are a public service broadcaster and their revenue comes from tax and TV licenses fees menaing that they dont need to run commercial ads.

Independant

An independant radio station is a radio station, which is not owned by a conglomerate. The production of Independant radio stations has been made easier due the development of technology and development of internet radio. Technoligical converagnce has made it possible for peopel to upload and stream their shows to the internet.
