LO1 Analysis of a radio programme
Purpose- BBC radio 1's purpose is to entertain, educate and inform the listener. for example they play popular charts music, have interviews with celebrities i.e Jake Gylenhall, James Cordon they also have special segments like 'new music friday' These radio pieces entertain the audience. They also have factual news pieces that inform the viewer on current affairs and notable events around the world. The radio station is also designed to be interactive and enourages paricipation from their audience through call ins and give aways i.e. they hold a call in every morning called 'Celebrity gambel' this is where the caller can either choose a song that the host suggests or take a gamble son the song choise of 3 celebrities. The also do ticket give aways to things like Radio 1s big weekender, this an example of synergy.
Income- The BBC has no income from sponsorship or advertising as they are a public service provider their revenue is sourced from TV licenses and tax. this means that they can concentrate on new contenet, The BBC gets £4,722million. per year through the licensing fee and in 2016 £36.2 million was allocated to the production of bbc radio 1
Scheduling - The Nick Grimshaw breakfast show is scheduled from 06:33 - 10:00, this type of scheduling is in keeping with the time that people get up and
commute to work this is a good scheduling technique as the audience are likely to tune in
using their car radio or alarm clock making them a captive audience.
Content - The content of BBC radio 1 is aimed at a younger audience aged 15-30 as they show
current and popular music and their news round up topics are orientated around that age
demographic i.e. student debt and tuition fees.
Staff and resources- The presenter of the breakfast show Nick Grimshaw is a good presenter for this as he has an energetic manner which engages with the audience and is why he is a good castign choise for the presenters role for a radio breakfast show. Many of their presenters however have different acsents i.e. a Welsh person reads the news this is to help with targeting demogrphics over the contry.
